Rencontre Child Theme for Divi
With Rencontre, you can be up and running quickly with a website for a conference or festival. A responsive schedule displays event sessions along with speakers (or performers).
The Home Page – an Overview of Your Event
The Event at a Glance
The “above the fold” view gives the viewer all the key details of the event at a glance. By looking at this screen, they can quickly tell if this is an event they are interested in and whether they want to scroll down or click on a menu button to learn more.
The event name and a brief description/tag line lets them know what the event is about. When and Where boxes let people know, well, when and where the event is taking place. Finally a countdown timer with colour changing circles add a little fun and anticipation.
If you have a keynote speaker, here is the place you can give them featured billing. An overview of the person’s bio, and/or the topic they will be presenting is followed by a call to action button inviting viewers to learn more about all the event speakers (or performers)
On the Agenda
Another feature section gives you the opportunity to expand more on your event agenda. Is there an overall theme to your event? Key informaton or highlights from the agenda are followed by a call to action button leading people to the schedule page to see your full agenda.
The Venue section allows you to detail the location of your event, with a call to action button leading to your venue page.
It is important to give people a way to contact you in the event that they have questions about your event.
You may plan to have a newsletter that will allow you to capture leads that you can continue to market to about your event. If they have already registered, delivering a newsletter with event news can help keep the event top of mind. If they have not yet registered, regular contact will give them more reasons to sign up. The Rencontre theme includes styling for the Divi Optin module that you can connect with your AWeber or MailChimp account. If you have established social network pages for the event, the “Let’s get social” section invites people to follow you on their preferred network. This is another way to keep in touch and keep spreading the word about your event.
Prominent Register Button
The Register button is highlighted in your accent colour and is always at the top of the screen, making it easy for people to click when they have made the decision that they want to attend your event.
An overview of your event lets people know what they can expect, and call to action buttons invite them to learn more or go ahead and register for the event.
Add a little colour and fun by highlighting some key numbers – like the number of speakers/performers, number of days, number of event sponsors, number of countries represented, etc.
Many conferences and festivals depend on corporate sponsors to help finance the event. You can promote your top level sponsors here on the home page. A call to action button links to the Sponsors page where people can see all of your sponsors.
It is very important to make it easy for people to register for your event, and to understand the cost. If you have different packages, e.g. Earlybird, VIP, etc, you can use the price widgets to detail the different packages – what they include and how much they cost. Each package links to your Register page where they can complete their registration.
This section includes the 3 latest posts from your blog/news section. You can use your event blog to post news like new speakers or performers who have been added, new sponsors. As I have done in the demo site, you can also include information about the conference location and other things people can do while in town.
Speakers (or Performers) Section
Speaker Overview Page
The WordPress Cr3ativ Conference plugin is used to manage speakers and event sessions. The speaker overview page includes a Divi section where you can highlight your keynote speaker. The remainder of the page – the speaker images with links to their bio pages – is generated from the speaker bios.
Speaker Bio Page
The Cr3ativ Conference plugin gives you a custom post type to enter speaker bios. You can include their photo as the featured image, their company, job title and website URL, as well as social media links. This will be displayed on a custom speaker bio page that also includes links to the event sessions that they are participating in.
Conference Sessions and Schedule
Session Detail Page
The Cr3ativ Conference plugin gives you a custom post type to enter details of each session. This includes the date and start and end times, location, speaker(s), category(ies), and a description of the session content.
Conference Session Pages
Your event schedule will be displayed chronologically by date and time. Each session title links to the session detail page, and each speaker also links to their bio page.
You can also categorize your events. In the demo I have concurrent events that are categorized as being for Users, Designers or Developers. I now have a page, as shown in the screen shot here, to display the sessions in one category. So in this example, if someone is interested in the Users track, they can easily see all the sessions that pertain to them. I have categorized “general” sessions (e.g. Lunch, Welcome) into all 3 categories so that people can see a complete schedule that pertains to them.
Sponsors are a very important aspect or many events, with corporate sponsorship helping to fund the event. A corporate sponsorship package will normally include promotion of the event sponsors on your website and in other event promotion. The Cr3ativ Sponsors plugin has been used in our demo to manage sponsors and sponsorship levels, and to generate a page with all the event sponsors with links to their websites.
An FAQ page is always a good idea – although you may have provided all the detail throughout the site, some people just like to jump to “here’s what I want to know”.
Your Venue page can include information about the location of the event – address, map and contact information. If people may be coming from out of town and require accommodation, this can be included too. Does the hotel offer a special conference rate? Or are there other hotels in the area? For a festival that takes place in multiple locations you will want to expand your Venue section.
Although contact information has been included on other pages, it is always a good idea to have a dedicated contact page that people can quickly locate in the menu.
For the demo site, I have used the Event Espresso Decaf plugin to sell tickets for the event. This plugin has not been included in the theme installation package, but it is available to download from the WordPress repository if you wish to use it for your event. There are many event ticketing options available, including EventBrite, Xing Events, WooCommerce as well as the premium version of Event Espresso. This leaves you free to choose the one that will work best for your particular event. Most will have a shortcode that you can place in a code module on your Registration page.
